Barbeaux...
To Phi in Washington DC whom is wondering why she has to paint the barbeau motif (little fleur de lys) in several firings with her new teacher even though she learned to do it in one firing in a previous lesson in Tokio.
...You are right Phi, barbeaux are painted in only one firing. If really necessary beginners may need two firings for the green leaves. To give them the needed shadow. But with good brush preparations, this should be done in once.
As you see in my first book, a barbeau is a flower with different petals. Each petal needs to be painted in three brushstrokes done with one brush filling. First you make the central brushstroke which will be the darkest one, then the right or the left one. Do not take more colour before the three brushstrokes are made ! This way your petals will be right, dark in the middle, lighter on both sides.
As you notice in my step to step studies, I use as much firings as needed to get a painting done. And I always advice students to use rather more firings than needed, to work with light coats in order to obtain transparence and depth. But some motifs, like the barbeau or little roses must be painted in one firing...
